The refuge is located approximately 9 miles northwest of Zimmerman, Minnesota, and roughly 50 miles northwest of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Nearby cities include Elk River, Big Lake, Monticello, Becker, Foley, Princeton, St. Cloud, and Zimmerman.
